As
recommended by Arthur Morris, one of
North America's premier bird photographers, join
us for an afternoon of spectacular bird
photography. In season, we'll travel to White
Pelican Island so that you can photograph these
majestic birds roosting on a sandbar. Here you
will find perhaps the largest concentration of
white pelicans in the Southeastern U.S. At their
peak, as many as 2000 White Pelicans roost on
the island which is located in Gasparilla Sound. |

As
sunset approaches, hundreds, even thousands of
White Ibises and Snowy Egrets begin to fly in to
roost in the mangroves. Opportunities for
photographing both single birds and large flocks
of wading birds in flight abound. Be sure to
bring lots of film. On most days, the boat is
grounded to provide a stable platform. Tripods
and big lenses are welcome, but be sure to bring
a hand-holdable flight lens also. Art never
boards without his Canon EF 100-400mm IS L zoom
lens and a good supply of Fuji Provia F 100
Film. |

Giant
White Pelican Sighted!
For the several
weeks we have had staying with us Klaus
Nigge, a German photographer who was
named Wildlife Photographer of the Year
in 2004 for his work on Bison in
Poland. He was with us two
winters photographing our
wonderful White Pelican Island and doing
most of his work from our kayaks. The
photo shows Klaus with the self-made
pelican suit he uses. We have had lots
of fun with this set up and he is an
outstanding dedicated photographic documentarian.
See Klaus Nigge's
article in the National Geographic June,
2006 issue. Most of his Florida photos
were taken on a Grande Tours Private
Charter.
